I didn't want to disturb it if I didn't have to. although for some reason you're able to get it to turn on with the external monitor connected, so theoretically the physical hardware is good. Second would be a bad video component. Then when I try to turn it back on, the keyboard and power lights come on but there's a black screen and no sound. find more info
There is no problem with overheating, the charger works perfectly, and I think this points to a software problem as opposed to a hardware one. If it detects something it thinks isn't quite right, it shuts it off the power to the backlight. She has an Emachines laptop running Vista x32 and the lcd will randomly turn on for her as the computer is booted up, the majority of the time it will not. The temperature spiking to 85 C is not a good sign...
