I'd been reading "other" site with "how to", nothing as clear and concise as the above. Changed Bios setting to disable for SATA support and it started on my dv8000. Note that everything except C: has no file system listed. For example, add the letter G: and the removable drive will be accessible at drive G:.
I do happen to have a dead drive and if I plug a thumb drive or nano into it, nothing happens. The command looks like as follows: chkdsk D: /f /r /x Substitute D for wherever your Non-Readable drive letter is. This harddrive is visible in my older Windows vista PC. (By the way, the eBay laptop came with a 1TB Seagate drive, but Click on the little triangle by Storage, and a Disk Management line should appear. But its not showing any external drive.

The problem is that when I plug it in it is first recognized (at least it sees something) and then it goes away (with the corresponding sound).
The bios page for the disc parameter is greyed out, cannot make the entries.
